Frailty Scales for Prognosis Assessment of Older Adult Patients after Acute Myocardial Infarction
2021
We aimed to compare the prognostic value of two different measures, the Fried’s Frailty Scale (FFS) and the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS), following myocardial infarction (MI). We included 150 patients ≥ 70 years admitted from AMI. Frailty was evaluated on the day before discharge. The primary endpoint was number of days alive and out of hospital (DAOH) during the first 800 days. Secondary endpoints were mortality and a composite of mortality and reinfarction. Frailty was diagnosed in 58% and 34% of patients using the FFS and CFS scales, respectively. During the first 800 days 34 deaths and 137 admissions occurred. The number of DAOH decreased significantly with increasing scores of both FFS…
An acute exposure to ozone impairs human olfactory functioning
2018
Ozone is a ubiquitous and irritant gas. We questioned whether an acute exposure to 0.2 ppm ozone impaired olfactory functioning.Healthy, normosmic subjects were exposed according to a parallel group design either to 0.2 ppm ozone (n = 15) or to sham (n = 13) in an exposure chamber for two hours. Possible irritating effects were assessed by questionnaire (range 0-5). The detection threshold of n-butanol was measured with the Sniffin' Sticks test before and after exposure. Olfactory thresholds were logarithmized and a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measurements was carried out to test the effects of exposure (ozone vs. sham) and time (before vs. after exposure). Additional…
Bridge-Induced Translocation between NUP145 and TOP2 Yeast Genes Models the Genetic Fusion between the Human Orthologs Associated With Acute Myeloid …
2017
In mammalian organisms liquid tumors such as acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are related to spontaneous chromosomal translocations ensuing in gene fusions. We previously developed a system named bridge-induced translocation (BIT) that allows linking together two different chromosomes exploiting the strong endogenous homologous recombination system of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The BIT system generates a heterogeneous population of cells with different aneuploidies and severe aberrant phenotypes reminiscent of a cancerogenic transformation. In this work, thanks to a complex pop-out methodology of the marker used for the selection of translocants, we succeeded by BIT technology to preci…
Diagnosis and management of AML in adults: 2017 ELN recommendations from an international expert panel
2017
Abstract The first edition of the European LeukemiaNet (ELN) recommendations for diagnosis and management of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in adults, published in 2010, has found broad acceptance by physicians and investigators caring for patients with AML. Recent advances, for example, in the discovery of the genomic landscape of the disease, in the development of assays for genetic testing and for detecting minimal residual disease (MRD), as well as in the development of novel antileukemic agents, prompted an international panel to provide updated evidence- and expert opinion-based recommendations. The recommendations include a revised version of the ELN genetic categories, a proposal for …
Unusual pattern of gastric and hepatic infiltration in an infant with acute monocytic leukemia
1995
A 10-month-old girl with acute monocytic leukemia is presented. Ultrasound of the abdomen on admission showed an unusual distribution of leukemia infiltrates in the stomach and liver. The leukemic infiltrates in the wall of the stomach presented as intraluminal polyps, while the leukemic infiltration of the liver was strictly confined to the portal vessels.
Liver stiffness measurement by transient elastography predicts early recovery from acute hepatitis
2010
We read with interest the lead article by Castera and Pinzani,1 particularly the comment regarding the role of transient elastography (TE) in the context of acute hepatitis (AH). The assumption that liver stiffness is determined exclusively by hepatic fibrosis has been challenged by evidence that patients with AH can have high values of liver stiffness measurement (LSM) by TE.2 AH is a suitable model for studying the kinetics of LSM, since inflammation and necrosis increase rapidly and sometimes massively, but may revert with equal speed. We evaluated 92 consecutive patients (mean age 41.8±16.3 years, 71.7% males) with symptomatic AH to assess how LSM was influenced by aetiology, and whethe…
Comparison of Histochemical Staining Methods and Correlation with Transient Elastography in Acute Hepatitis.
2014
Objective: To compare Masson's trichrome (MT), Sirius red (SR) and orcein staining in acute hepatitis (AH) and to correlate them with transient elastography (TE), a noninvasive method to assess hepatic fibrosis. Methods: We evaluated liver stiffness by TE in a cohort of 34 consecutive patients and assessed MT-, SR- and orcein-stained biopsies using the METAVIR scoring system and digital image analysis (DIA). Results: MT and SR both showed severe fibrosis (stage III-IV, DIA = 12.7%). Orcein showed absent or mild fibrosis (stage 0-II, DIA = 4.…
Magnetic resonance imaging in infections of the brain: findings in tuberculosis, listeriosis, toxoplasmosis, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, and…
1987
A total of 6 patients with various inflammatory brain diseases were investigated by MRI. Typical diagnostic criteria like signal intensity, location, and morphology of the lesions are presented. MRI proves to be a highly sensitive method to detect encephalitic foci, which, however, suffers from a low specificity. Therefore additional informations like case history, clinical findings, and serological data have to be considered to find the correct diagnosis.
0133 : Identifying familial hypercholesterolemia from registries of patients with acute myocardial infarction: an algorithm-based approach
2016
Background and aim Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is at very high risk of early myocardial infarction (MI). The prevalence of FH, which is estimated to be at least 1:500 in the general population, remains unclear in patients with acute MI. From databases of 3 French regional and nationwide registries of acute MI (RICO and FAST-MI 2005 and 2010, respectively), we aimed to determine FH prevalence by developing a specific algorithm. Methods and results Consecutive patients with AMI ≤48 hours of onset included 1) in FAST-MI : during a one-month period in 223 institutions at the end of 2005 and 213 institutions at the end of 2010, and 2) in RICO :from January 2001 – December 2013 (≈ 13 y), w…
